Le Mathis Bar, Paris

If you fancy going somewhere special after a busy day exploring the sights of Paris or upmarket shopping along the Champs-Élysées, you might want to stop by the Mathis Bar.

Opened by Gérald Nanty in 1996 with the help of Françoise Sagan, Le Mathis has always been the rendez-vous of choice for the intellectual elite of Paris. This sultry boudoir-style bar is ideally located in the heart of the French capital at 3, rue de Ponthieu in the 8th district of Paris, hidden behind a discrete door right next the entrance of the Hotel Mathis Elysées Matignon. At night Le Mathis becomes the hottest spot in town, with the delectable drinks and quintessential Parisian ambience drawing a chic and trendy crowd so exclusive that even the likes of John Malkovich and Madonna have been turned away at the door. For those lucky enough to enter, expect an evening of rubbing shuolders with famous celebrities and intellectuals alike, in a surprisingly down-to-earth atmosphere. For more details about the bar, read this interview with owner Gérald (in French).
