There’s nothing quite like recovering from one too many cocktails during a long, leisurely Sunday brunch. Blueberry pancakes or French toast drizzled in sweet maple syrup, creamy fruit smoothies or freshly squeezed orange juice, Eggs Benedict smothered in Hollandaise sauce – all accompanied with a healthy dose of freshly brewed coffee, of course. With something to please every palate, this is the meal to top all meals.
How do you take your brunch? Whatever takes your mid-morning fancy, you are entitled to indulge. Those with a sweet tooth can tuck into fluffy pancakes, buttery pastries, yogurt and honey or waffles with a snowy sugar topping.
If all that glucose at midday will send your systems into overdrive, a safe bet is the brunch staple: eggs. Scrambled, poached or fried; perched upon on golden toast or the classic English muffin, accompanied with spinach, salmon or ham – the possibilities are endless.
And for those who simply can’t decide: why not live dangerously, and have a combination
of the two. This is supposed to be half-breakfast and half-lunch, after all. Pancakes or waffles topped with salty bacon and drenched in sugary maple syrup, anyone?
Splendia have scoured Barcelona for the most mouthwatering brunches of them all. Our top tip: Picnic in the Born. Typical fare with a twist is on offer (note the accompanying Bloody Mary sauce, to be splashed as you see fit), alongside a mouthwatering burger, pulled pork sandwich, cheesecake and crumble. Wash it down with a mimosa or bellini for ultimate indulgence.
Milk, on Carrer d’En Gignàs, and Marmalade, on Raval’s Riera Alta, serve typical American-style brunch in a friendly and relaxed ambience. At Poble Sec’s Federal, you can enjoy your late-morning delights in the sun on the café’s terrace.
Brunch is fast becoming a worldwide phenomenon. In London, try the famous Fortnum & Mason, or the trendy Breakfast Club. New York offers the French bistro Pastis and Parisians can enjoy their scrambled eggs at Le Fumoir, before walking it off during a trip round the iconic Louvre museum, just next door.
