A trip to the cinema is a holiday from real life. On a dreary Sunday afternoon you can travel the world, see someone save the human race, or immerse yourself in a love affair. However, just as there are thousand of different hotels out there to suit your mood, there are also different genres of cinema to cater to your every need.

Thailand’s Onscreen Starlets
It was one of this summer’s most talked about films, but The Hangover Part II doesn’t just feature an all star cast of actors, two of our top Thai getaways also put in an appearance. You too can have a stay worthy of the silver screen at these premiere hotels…
One of the film’s biggest stars is the Phulay Bay, Krabi, a retreat in Southern Thailand that is nothing short of breathtaking. With a
wide variety of pavilions and villas to suit every taste, Phulay Bay sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the coast of the Andaman Sea, surrounded by mountains, ocean and rainforest. Elephant trekking, diving, rock climbing and jungle trekking are just a few of the activities available to guests – if they even want to leave the luxury of the hotel’s spa and infinity pool. From its 24-hour personalised butler service, to rainforest showers and private plunge pools, the world’s first Ritz-Carlton Reserve truly is beyond comparison. Continue reading
Splendia Choice: Margutta 54 Luxury Suites, Rome
Our favourite hotel this month is the sleek and contemporary Margutta 54 Luxury Suites, a sophisticated yet inviting collection of four exclusive suites located in the heart of historical Rome. Just minutes from the Spanish Steps and the Piazza del Popolo, Margutta 54 is the perfect base for exploring this fascinating city.
The hotel takes its name from Via Margutta, the
street where it is situated. Via Margutta is a quaint, narrow street that maintains a charming, local atmosphere in the midst of bustling Rome. An important hub for artistic creativity and output since the 16th century, today the street is lined with quirky art shops and galleries, as well as an increasing number of antique stores and design boutiques. Since the 1950s, the street has been home to Cento Pittori Via Margutta, an organisation that celebrates the work of one hundred artists, both local and international, by arranging casual street exhibitions where art enthusiasts can view pieces and meet the artists themselves.
Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures
The newest exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York is Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures – a show focusing on the pop art giant’s cinematic portraits and black and white silent films from the mid-1960s.
Part of the Screen Tests collection consists of 12 moving images of the ‘60s Downtown avant-garde scene. Fascinating period artifacts, they are a testament to Warhol’s obsession with celebrity and include superstars like Edie Sedgwick, Velvet Underground’s Nico, Allen Ginsberg, Susan Sontag, Lou Reed and Dennis Hopper.
Other films included are the 1963 films ‘Eat’, depicting fellow pop artist Robert Indiana eating a mushroom, and ‘Sleep’, in which one can observe American poet and performance artist John Giorno sleeping.
A 50-seat movie theatre at the rear of the gallery has been created especially for this exhibition and screens the film ‘Kiss’, a 50-minute collage of couples kissing.
After the event, guests are given the opportunity to record their own ‘screen tests’ under the direction of artist Conrad Ventur. The tests will be projected on the walls of MoMA’s Marron Atrium, as well as featuring on the Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures website. Continue reading
