An Italian Golf Dream

When planning a golfing holiday, various destinations spring to mind; the USA, New Zealand and Australia all have sprawling, well-equipped courses, and undoubtedly the obvious choice is Scotland – home of the modern game, golf has been played here for centuries and now has more courses per person than any other country in the world. However, one country you probably haven’t considered is Italy. Italians are known for their passion for football and Formula 1, but few people know Tuscany is home to the Argentario Golf Resort & Spa, one of Europe’s leading golf courses.

This 18-hole golf course sits on a stretch of beautiful Tuscan coastline, surrounded by olive groves; the perfect location to enjoy spectacular views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and pristine Orbetello Lagoon. The weather is consistently mild, creating pleasant putting conditions year-round. The 77 hectare course, designed by the architect David Mezzacane and Italian golfer Baldovino Dassù, requires precision and skill due to a variable caused by a light breeze. If you’re not up to professional standard, fear not; the Club has a 24-station driving range where you can hone your skills and the team of qualified, experienced staff is happy to help. And if that isn’t enough, the resort has received recognition for its environmental policy, using only natural products to maintain the course. Continue reading

Innovation Meets Authenticity in the Nordics

A traditional hotel experience, however luxurious it is, may be a thing of the past. Experienced travellers are looking for something new and two countries offering truly authentic, eco-friendly experiences are Sweden and Finland.

In the picturesque Swedish village of Harads, 60km south of the Arctic Circle, is Tree Hotel, consisting of individually themed ‘treehouses’ high up in the trees.

So far, five treehouses already exist – The Mirror Cube, The Bird’s Nest, The Blue Cone, The Cabin and The UFO – and an additional 20 are being built. Each treehouse is designed and executed by a different architect, using exclusive techniques and materials.

The philosophy behind Tree Hotel was the creation of a ‘well designed hotel which allows visitors to live in harmony with nature amongst the trees’. It was inspired by the film ‘The Treelover’, by Swedish director Jonas Selberg Auguststen – a philosophical film about what trees mean to humans, both culturally and historically.

At a similar altitude in the neighbouring country of Finland lies the Hotel and Igloo Village KakslauttanenContinue reading

London Legend The Savoy Re-opens its Doors

World famous luxury hotel, The Savoy London has reopened its doors after one of the most ambitious restorations in British history. The hotel closed in December 2007, so the entire legendary building could be restored in an operation worth over £220 million.

The main design aesthetics, Edwardian and Art Deco, have been carefully reworked under the guidance of world-famous designer Pierre Yves Rochon, ensuring the spirit and impeccable design of the hotel remain intact.

Established in 1889, the hotel became famous not only for its glittering parties and glamorous guests but also for innovations, such as en suite bathrooms and London’s first public elevator. Continuing this avant-garde tradition, the restoration has brought with it some technological advances for the 21st century. A new system reclaims heat from kitchen appliances to preheat hot water and another turns cooking oil from the restaurant into bio diesel. 90% of the Savoy’s waste is now recycled and the hotel has  introduced the world’s first Green Butlers. Going beyond traditional duties, Green Butlers have a vast knowledge of all things eco-friendly in London – to help you have an eco-friendly, green stay! Continue reading
