I arrived in Barcelona in September 2011, to a world of a Ricardo Bofill at the sleek and gigantic (the size of 850 football fields) Terminal 1 El Prat airport. With a love for hot climates, fashion, food, Gaudí and that deep, butterflies-in-stomach, firework display passion for… Watermelon Martinis, it was time to start my Barcelona adventure.
A quick taxi ride to my first apartment in the Gothic Quarter, suitcases unpacked, photos pinned up of friends and family back home, it was time to get down to the nitty gritty and do what every cosmopolitan, twenty-something girl does on her first night in a new city… try a Watermelon Martini at W Barcelona of course! Would they really taste as good as back home?!
Arriving in a strange city, no
t knowing a soul and my Spanish skills reaching as far as ‘otra sangría, por favor’, it would be fair to assume that I was feeling a little lost, scared and had a raging desire to leap over the side of the WET® Bar into the Mediterranean and swim west back to England as fast as my arms could take me. However, relaxing on an elegant cabana, sipping my beloved cocktail (which if I dare say, maybe tastes a little better in Barcelona) and chatting to a group of friendly Swedish girls who invited me to stay for the WET® Deck party, Barcelona didn’t seem like such an unfamiliar city after all!
Sipping our fruity cocktails, we watched as the WET® Deck transformed into an ultra-smooth, pink and blue neon lit party venue. The dreamy decadent sunbeds vanished as chic, white tables with colourful print cushions were scattered around the deck. Waitresses changed into little black dresses and the pink and blue neon lights lit Barceloneta beach and beyond. Guests in flowing 
pastel maxi dresses and crisp white linen shirts started to gather around the pool, and canapés of delicious tapas and scrumptious sushi were given out.
As the night continued, the atmosphere was electric, warm and friendly. Couples hid out under intimate cabanas and groups of friends huddled around tables overflowing with ice-cold Veuve Clicquot. Wearing his iconic eyeglasses, Wally Lopez took to the decks and smiled at the beautiful crowd as a cheer erupted and people waved their hands in the ocean breeze air. The music got louder and darkness fell on the glittering, emblematic hotel.
We mingled with other guests, danced to soulful beats and soaked up the views of Barcelona after hours. As midnight struck and guests ascended to the rooftop bar Eclipse for the after party, we followed and whisked up to the 26th floor to dance the night away…
