An Insider’s Guide to Naples

Natascia Petrosino, 30, is a manager at La Cilegina Lifestyle Hotel in Naples. We asked about her favourite places in her native city…

What do you love the most about Naples?

I love the city’s artistic heritage, as well as the warmth of the people who live here. My favourite neighbourhood is Piazza dei Martiri – one of the most stylish and typically Neapolitan areas of the city.

Where would you recommend to eat and drink  in Naples?

The best place for drinks is Gran Caffè Gambrinus, which is close to the San Carlo theatre. La Caffettiera, close to Piazza de Martiri, is a good place to relax with a cup of coffee. And I like the fresh fish at Terrazza Calabritto or the typical Neapolitan cuisine at Ciro a Santa BrigidaContinue reading

Vienna Virtuoso

Vanessa Leismüller is a revenue, reservations and e-commerce manager at The Ring Hotel in Vienna, “one of the most beautiful cities in the world”. We asked her where to go and what to do in the Austrian capital.

What do you love most about Vienna?

I especially love its diversity. There’s such a broad variety waiting to be discovered within the limits of one single city. There are historic landmarks as well as modern buildings; there is history and art combined with nightlife and fashion. There are wine farmers in Vienna producing and selling the most delicious wine that can be enjoyed in the green hills overlooking the city. In winter there is even a ski slope in the city with night skiing.

Which is your favourite area in the city and why?

My favourite area is the 19th district, Wien Döbling, where you can find marvellous restaurants, great historic architecture and beautiful nature.

What are your favourite design and architecture landmarks?

Schönbrunn Palace, St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Vienna State Opera House are the most famous and the most beautiful landmarks within the city.

Which are your favourite cultural attractions?

The Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum Albertina with its great collection of art and design provide everything a cultural connoisseur may wish for. Continue reading

Love Lisbon

Sara Van-Deste is Global Operations Manager in Splendia’s Barcelona office. Here she shares some of her favourite spots in her native Lisbon.

What do you love most about Lisbon?

I love that it’s a city of character and contrasts – from picturesque barrios maintaining the marks of history, to futuristic architecture and trendy lifestyles.

Which is your favourite area?

Chiado – an elegant district of old style cafes, theatres, bookshops and fashion boutiques. Much of the area was destroyed by a massive fire in 1988. However, all the destroyed buildings have been restored by Álvaro de Siza Vieira, a famous Portuguese architect.

Which are your favourite design and architecture landmarks?

I love the Belem Monuments: Jerónimo’s Monastery, Monumento aos Descobrimentos and the Belem Tower, which is listed as an UNESCO world heritage site.

Also, one of the most stunning modern sights in Lisbon is the Gare do Oriente train station. It was built by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava with a roof of glass and steel made to look like a row of trees.

Which are your favourite museums?

I like the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, which has a wide collection of both ancient and modern art. Sharing the lovely botanical garden is The Modern Art Centre, which houses contemporary and modern Portuguese art as well as an important collection of 20th century British art.

I also like the CCBCentro Cultural de Belem – one of the major cultural centres in Europe. It plays host to a variety of festivals, art performances and galleries on design, photography and architecture. Continue reading

La Bella Venezia

Venice is one of those places that deserves a visit at least once in every lifetime. However, with herds of tourists visiting this beautiful city each year, the authenticity can easily be lost. We decided to have a chat with Massimiliano De Stefani, 35, a Venetian who knows the spots that are often overlooked by the tourist crowds. Read on to experience the real Venice…

What do you love most about Venice?

I love the fact that there are no cars and that you get to be in direct contact with people a lot more than in other places. Also, sitting in San Marco’s Square after midnight when everything is closed to enjoy its beauty and absolute tranquility.

Which is your favourite area in the city and why?

Cannaregio and Castello are my two favourite sestieri (Venetian districts) because they are off the beaten track and still conserving their authenticity. The Jewish Ghetto, a nice stroll along Fondamente Nove – from where you can get a boat to the Murano and Burano islands – and the hidden gem that is Santa Maria dei Miracoli church are my favourite spots.

What are your favourite design and architectural landmarks?

There are several brand new things to see in Venice along the recently dubbed kilometre of art; the new Museo Della Dogana and the Vedova museum are two unmissable gems that I really like. Continue reading
