Dubai: The City of Surprises

Sunbathe, ski, scuba dive, shop, sail… Anything is possible in Dubai! A real life rags to riches story, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has led Dubai to become the city of innovation and surprise. Flamboyant seven-star hotels, word-class restaurants, VIP treatment for every visitor, a skyline like no other – the world’s tallest building and the world’s largest shopping mall. In fact… whatever the heart desires.

John William Bower – a frequent visitor from London to Dubai on business gives us some great recommendations for making the most of a holiday in this extraordinary city.

When is the best time of year to visit?

Dubai is a 24/7, 365 day a year destination and can be visited at all times of the year. July-August are extremely hot with temperatures reaching into the 50s, so I would advise to stay clear of these months. Jet in at spring or autumn when the weather is delightful.

Alpine Escapes

With colder evenings and shorter days, the winter months are creeping upon us and those in the know are already planning their ski trips. It’s time to dust off those skis and grab your Moncler, as Splendia brings you luxurious mountain stays in the finest resorts.

Nestled in the heart of Val d’Isère sits Hotel Avenue Lodge, an elegant Savoyard-style chalet where you’ll find everything you need after a hard day on the slopes. Just a short wander from the legendary ski runs and boasting its own Espace Killy ski area, you can enjoy a no fuss holiday. Retire to your room to find Jean-Philippe Nuel decor with comfortable furnishings and sumptuous fabrics. Enjoy the convenience of the exclusive shops that Val d’Isère has to offer, and sample traditional French cuisine at the hotel’s restaurant followed by a cocktail at the sophisticated Lounge Bar.

Vienna Virtuoso

Vanessa Leismüller is a revenue, reservations and e-commerce manager at The Ring Hotel in Vienna, “one of the most beautiful cities in the world”. We asked her where to go and what to do in the Austrian capital.

What do you love most about Vienna?

I especially love its diversity. There’s such a broad variety waiting to be discovered within the limits of one single city. There are historic landmarks as well as modern buildings; there is history and art combined with nightlife and fashion. There are wine farmers in Vienna producing and selling the most delicious wine that can be enjoyed in the green hills overlooking the city. In winter there is even a ski slope in the city with night skiing.

Which is your favourite area in the city and why?

My favourite area is the 19th district, Wien Döbling, where you can find marvellous restaurants, great historic architecture and beautiful nature.

What are your favourite design and architecture landmarks?

Schönbrunn Palace, St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Vienna State Opera House are the most famous and the most beautiful landmarks within the city.

Which are your favourite cultural attractions?

The Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum Albertina with its great collection of art and design provide everything a cultural connoisseur may wish for. Continue reading

Luxury on the Slopes

As the Christmas celebrations come to an end, there isn’t much that beats an energetic ski holiday. We’ve compiled a list of our favourite hotels that besides having amazing locations for memorable skiing, also offer a place of relaxation and fine dining once the sun sets.

Kempinski Grand Hotel Des Bains, St Moritz, Switzerland

Located in the popular Swiss resort of St Moritz, this century old hotel offers a truly memorable stay, both during and after ski. It’s a distinctively individual and exclusive venue that blends local charm and tradition with contemporary design. This luxurious hotel has three restaurants: Les Saisons offers delicacies from all over the world, Ca de Oro is a luxurious Italian restaurant and Enoteca serves local cuisine.

However, the true star of this hotel is its 2,500 m2 spa and wellness area that includes an indoor pool, fitness area, sauna, aroma grotto, massage and beauty treatments… The list of ways to indulge goes on.

Hotel L’Arboisie, Megève, France

Located between the valleys of Upper Savoy in the heart of the French Alps, Hotel L Arboise has a charming ‘cabin in the woods’ feel. The décor of the rooms is inspired by the four elements and incorporates a mix of traditional use of slate and wood and modern comfort. An excellent restaurant serving Savoy specialties, as well as a well-equipped bar are on hand. The hotel also has indoor and outdoor pools and a spa with a Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, for some well-deserved pampering after a day on the slopes. Continue reading
